Dr. Kilian Bälz is a partner focusing on project development and finance. He divides his time between AMERELLER’s Berlin, Cairo, and Tripoli offices.

Kilian has broad experience in advising clients on debt and equity investments in the energy, transportation, telecom, and financial sectors across the Middle East and North Africa. He further represents clients in arbitration proceedings under all major arbitration rules and advises on trade sanctions as well as business and human rights.

Kilian furthermore is the head of AMERELLER’s Libya practice and has many years of experience in advising international companies on all aspects of doing business in Libya.

Before joining AMERELLER as partner in 2010, Kilian was a partner at Gleiss Lutz and the acting director of the Regional Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency, a regional policy platform supporting renewable energies based in Cairo. He publishes widely on Middle Eastern business law and is a regular speaker at conferences. In 2008, he was a fellow at Harvard Law School.

Advised a global leader in rail technology on its participation in the supply, construction, and operation of the monorail lines in Egypt, connecting downtown Cairo with Sixth of October City and the New Administrative Capital. The deal value was EUR 3.72 billion
Representing a German construction company in a EUR 20 million arbitration under the ADCCAC Rules against two engineers relating to the collapse of a park deck
Representing of a German manufacturer of medical products in a EUR 2 million DIS arbitration against its former Egyptian dealer
Representing of a German manufacturer of sanitary products in securing an anti-suit injunction in DIS arbitral proceedings against a Jordanian distributor
Advised a Chinese contractor on an EPC+F transaction for the expansion of a power plant in the Basra area
Represented a Middle Eastern country in proceedings challenging the enforcement into the property of the country’s former embassy in Bonn by two German companies who had obtained an ICC award against the country over a project there
